RSS — Renewed value!

Thing 3 -

I must admit when I saw RSS as a Thing, I was annoyed. RSS has been around a while and it never really caught on with me. I know others who have used RSS readers for news, blog updates, and other articles of information, but for me the idea never really caught on. When RSS emerged as the next big thing, I was reading news websites much like one would browse a newspaper, and blogs had not become the “blogosphere” it is today. As such, I never really got into RSS subscribing…

However, coming back to it now in this exercise has honestly surprised me how handy this could be for me. Two reasons:

  1. My news/blog reading habits have changed. I’m less interested in browsing news websites for articles of interest. Anymore I know the sources I like and want to get to the point. (And some of these sources now include blogs.) RSS subscriptions could really help me with this.
  2. Replace some Twitter subscriptions with RSS feeds. A number of Twitter accounts I follow simply tweet links to bigger stories that reside in one location. My suspicion is that these are news services that were setup to utilize RSS and have been “fit” into using Twitter for delivery. These tweets (if they can even be called tweets in their purist form) provide a lot of clutter and make tweet reading annoying.

That said, I’m going to give RSS subscription a shot in my personal life, as well as subscribing to my classmates 23 Things blogs.
